Julia Floyd Smith papers, 1957-1986.

This collection contains correspondence, research notes, clippings, articles, and other miscellaneous materials relating to Dr. Julia Floyd Smith from 1957 to 1986. Included are Smith's research notes and research materials for her two books: Slavery and plantation growth in Antebellum Florida and Slavery and rice culture in low country Georgia, 1750-1860. Also included are materials from Smith's tenure as a professor at Georgia State College including her lecture notes, grant proposals, and correspondence. The collection was given by the estate of her husband, Albert F. Smith.

Julia Floyd Smith was born on 30 January 1914 and resided in Savannah, Georgia with her husband, Albert F. Smith. Smith attended Florida State University where she received her B.S., M.S., and PhD in history. Smith taught history with an emphasis on the antebellum South for twenty five years at institutions of higher education including Armstrong Junior College (present day Armstrong Atlantic State University) from 1955 to 1961 and Georgia Southern College (present day Georgia State University) ...
